November 14, 2014:
For the Fall 2014 A.W. Mellon Workshop: Art and Scholarship Collaboratory #3, “Speech Acts,” Glass Lab faculty Helen Lee ran a two-part workshop, “WORD,” that explored language, performance, and materiality. Organized by Katie Schaag, Andrew Salyer, Jill Casid, and Jon McKenzie, the Art and Scholarship Collaboratory workshops investigate, invent, and pay attention to possibilities in the praxis of art and scholarship.

Lee presented a slideshow about her work to workshop participants. Participants were then asked to come up with one-word responses to her work. These words were then taken into the hotshop with the glass students. On one bench, students worked with workshop participants in playing a game of hot glass “hangman” with the chosen words. On another bench, glass students encased one of the words in a speech bubble inflated by workshop participants.
